INTERVIEW WITH 41-YEAR-OLD TOGOLESE WOMAN ASIETOU IBRAHIMSOKODE, TOGO - JUNE 10: Nestled in the tropical heart of West Africa, the small nation of Togo is home to nearly 8 million people and an economy deeply rooted in agriculture. But for many women, life’s challenges have led them to keep an old craft alive: turning wood into charcoal. About 20 kilometers outside the city of Sokode, in the quiet village of Bavile, 41-year-old Asietou Ibrahim gathers wood from the surrounding forests. Using a method passed down through generations, she carefully burns the wood underground to produce charcoal — a skill that helps her support her family in tough economic times. While Togo faces widespread poverty, the resilience and dedication of women like Asietou shine through, as they hold on to traditions that sustain both their livelihoods and their communities.
