China: Locust farming big income earner in E China
Locust farming big income earner in E China [Voice_over] Locust farming is big business in Dongying City of east China's Shandong Province, where they're raised for both their medical properties and as a source of human and animal protein. At this locust farm, the critters jump around inside giant plastic greenhouses, as workers package them into bundles. Locust farm owner Li said he expects a total yield of more than 7,500 kilos this year. [Sound_bite] Li Qingpeng, locust farm owner: "Weight of locusts in each greenhouse is about 500 kg. With retail price of 5 to 5.5 U.S. dollars per kilogram and four harvest times, we expect the first revenue is about 34,000 dollars." [Voice_over] To ensure the bugs are of good quality, the temperature inside the greenhouses, and the food they eat are strictly controlled. [Sound_bite] Lu Shougang, person in charge of feeding: "We use sunshades to keep greenhouses temperature of 25 to 32 degree Celsius. We control the quantity of locusts. Less than 1,000 locusts are in 1 square meter." [Voice_over] The farmer said with the right food and temperature nurturing the locusts' growth, the bugs weight can increase by almost 20 percent.
