LEADER OF PALESTINIAN STUDENTS MOVEMENT, MAYA ISSA, SPEAKING TO CAMERAROME, ITALY - JUNE 10, 2025: A group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered outside the European Union’s diplomatic representation in Rome on Tuesday, June 10, to protest Israel’s seizure of the Gaza-bound aid ship “Madleen” and the EU institutions’ “silence” on the matter. The protest, organized under the slogan “We break the silence: Everyone with the Freedom Flotilla,” drew hundreds of people who criticized the European Union and European Parliament for failing to speak out against Israel’s actions. Protesters called for the immediate release of all activists detained aboard the “Madleen” and accused both the EU and the Italian government of being complicit in what they described as Israel’s “genocide” in Gaza. Participants waved Palestinian flags and carried placards reading “Food for Gaza,” “Hands off the Freedom Flotilla,” “Stop arming Israel,” and “End the genocide.” The Madleen, part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, was seized by Israeli naval forces early Monday morning in international waters. The boat was carrying supplies, including baby formula and medical materials. It had 12 crew on board, including Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, French-Palestinian Member of the European Parliament Rima Hassan, and Turkish activist Suayb Ordu. Its interception has drawn widespread criticism from national governments and organizations such as Amnesty International.
