Thai protesters rallied outside the Cambodian Embassy in Bangkok as clashes erupted along the border with their neighbour.

Furious nationalists marched outside the heavily guarded building on Monday, June 9, to urge the Thai government to swiftly act on the territorial dispute.

Footage shows protesters carrying Thai flags and placards as they slammed Foreign Affairs Minister Maris Sangiampongsa for allegedly neglecting his duties.

Protest leader Phichit Chaimongkol, head of the Student and People's Network for Thailand Reform, said: 'The Cambodian ambassador should have been summoned as a warning, but the Thai government did nothing. The Minister of Foreign Affairs remained silent, leaving the military to defend the country alone. That's why everything now seems to benefit Cambodia.

'Even though the Cambodian military withdrew from Thai territory, it was a retreat based on principle. In reality, Cambodia still lays claim to four areas: Chong Bok, Prasat Ta Muen Thom, Prasat Ta Muen Tod, and Prasat Ta Kwai.

'Right now, we are like Cambodia's pawns. We don't see any politicians or Cabinet members come out to show Thailand's sovereignty - not even a single one. It is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that must say to the world that that area is Thailand's territory.'

Thanop Panyapattanakul, Assistant Permanent Secretary of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, later arrived to receive the protesters' letter of complaint.

Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have intensified following a deadly clash between their troops in a disputed area of Ubon Ratchathani, on May 28.

The skirmish killed a Cambodian sergeant. Thailand said it was committed to resolving the dispute conflict through bilateral means, while Cambodia has vowed to bring the case before the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

Thailand and Cambodia have a fractious history. The Khmer Empire once stretched across much of Southeast Asia before the ancient leaders moved their base south to Phnom Penh in the 16th century amid water shortages.

Thai tribes used it as a chance to encroach and claim much of the deserted land, including priceless sandstone temples and artefacts.

In the 1970s, Thailand supported the Khmer Rouge while they carried out one of the world's worst ever genocides. The country then provided sanctuary for the group's murderous leaders, even allegedly stealing aid funds that were intended to rebuild Cambodia.
