Officer, Bystanders Rescue Trapped Driver From Burning Vehicle
CHESTER, N.Y. — A quick-thinking officer and several good Samaritans helped save a woman's life early Sunday morning after a vehicle rollover and fire on Kings Highway near Knapps View Park.
Just after 4 a.m. on June 8, Town of Chester Police Officer Nicholas Contino was the first to arrive at the scene of a rollover crash. The driver, a 68-year-old Warwick woman, was trapped inside the burning vehicle. Officer Contino provided his fire extinguisher to a passing motorist, then broke the sunroof to gain access and began the rescue.
With the help of two motorists and a paramedic from Empress EMS, the woman was successfully pulled from the vehicle and moved to safety. She suffered burns on approximately one-third of her body and remains in stable condition at Westchester Medical Center’s Burn Unit.
Town of Chester Police Department praised Officer Contino for his actions, stating they significantly increased the motorist’s chances of survival.
