Floods and landslides have hit several locations in the Mentawai Islands Regency, West Sumatra, since Tuesday, triggered by heavy rain and extreme weather over the past two days

Mentawai is an island region in West Sumatra that has the best surfing location in the world besides Hawaii. Many foreign tourists come to enjoy the Mentawai waves.

The flood height reached 1 to 1.5 meters.

Spokesperson for the West Sumatra BPBD, Ilham Wahab confirmed the news of the flood that hit the island area.

He said, from the temporary report there were several landslide flood points in the area. However, the most severely affected was the North Sipora District.

On Wednesday, the Mentawai Basarnas Team evacuated residents and several students who were trapped in the flood in the area.

Head of the Mentawai Search and Rescue (SAR) Office, Rudi explained, the SAR operation was focused on helping the evacuation process of residents trapped in the flood.
