Stunning ‘Milk Lake’ Draws Tourists in Inner Mongolia with Natural White Waters
A breathtaking natural phenomenon has turned Bayanchagan Lake in Taibus Banner, Xilin Gol League (Inner Mongolia), into what locals are calling a “Milk Lake,” drawing waves of tourists eager to see and photograph the surreal landscape.
The lake’s milky-white appearance is caused by calcium carbonate and other mineral particles stirred up from the lakebed. As these particles remain suspended in the water, they scatter light and create the striking white hue. The lake’s weakly alkaline, mineral-rich waters enhance the effect.
Tucked deep within the untouched Gongbaolage Grassland, the lake remains largely undeveloped, preserving its original ecological beauty. The best viewing period is late June to August during the rainy season, when increased water flow and animal activity intensify the visual effect. On sunny days, the lake shimmers with soft light, creating a stunning contrast with the blue sky, white clouds, and surrounding grassland.
In June 2025, a quirky “milk-from-a-tap” attraction was also introduced. Though the water itself isn’t drinkable, visitors can enjoy fresh milk dispensed from taps connected to underground sealed containers. The initiative is currently in a free trial phase, with plans to commercialize it in the future.
