-ANTALYA, TÜRKİYE - JUNE 11, 2025: The endangered Posidonia oceanica, an endemic Mediterranean seagrass species known as the "lungs of the ocean," is under threat along the coastline of Türkiye’s southern Antalya province, particularly in the popular diving destination of Kas. Covering the seabed with dense underwater meadows, Posidonia oceanica plays a vital role in the marine ecosystem by producing oxygen, supporting biodiversity and stabilizing sediment. One square meter of this seagrass can generate approximately 15-20 liters of oxygen per day, creating a rich habitat for marine life. Despite its ecological importance, the species is classified as endangered and is listed under protection by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Türkiye is a party to several international agreements that aim to protect this vital marine plant. Kaş, renowned for its crystal-clear waters where blue and green hues meet, is home to a wealth of ecological and biological diversity. Every year, the district attracts thousands of local and international diving enthusiasts. However, increasing boat traffic poses a significant risk to the seagrass meadows. Environmentalists and marine biologists stress the urgent need for expanded protective measures and stricter regulations to safeguard Posidonia oceanica and the marine life it supports.
