TRACES OF DESTRUCTION ON BUILDINGSKHARTOUM, SUDAN - JUNE 12: Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, has slowly begun to recover from the devastating conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), following the army’s full control of the city on May 20. For over two years, Khartoum was a major battleground in the conflict that erupted on April 15, 2023. The clashes left deep scars across the city, with buildings bearing the marks of intense shelling and gunfire. Bullet holes and mortar damage are still visible on many rooftops and walls. Despite the widespread destruction, signs of life are returning. With the city now under army control, residents have slowly begun returning — many during the recent Eid al-Adha holiday — to rebuild what they can of their homes and neighborhoods. The war, now entering its third year, has led to one of the largest displacement crises in the world. Millions have fled their homes, and humanitarian conditions across Sudan remain dire. While the Sudanese army controls the country’s east, north, central, and southern regions, RSF forces still maintain a presence in parts of western Sudan. On May 20, the army announced that Khartoum had been fully cleared of RSF fighters.
