LYNN BOYLAN, MEMBER OF EUROPEAN PARLIEMENT, SPEAKING TO CAMERA (English) BRUSSELS, BELGIUM - JUNE 12: European Union staff members and a group set to begin a hunger strike on June 16 at the Beguinage Church staged a demonstration Thursday, June 12, in front of the European Parliament, calling for an end to the genocide in Gaza. The protest, typically held by EU institution employees every Thursday in front of the European Commission, was relocated this week to Luxembourg Square, outside the Parliament, in solidarity with the hunger strikers. During the demonstration, some participants dressed as Israeli soldiers, while others wore prisoner uniforms with their hands chained, kneeling in symbolic protest. Banners displaying images of Palestinian detainees and prison conditions were held up. Chants such as “Stop the genocide,” “End the Israeli occupation,” “Lift impunity,” “Prosecute violent settlers,” and “Impose sanctions on Israel” echoed through the square. Protesters also demanded the release of French MEP of Palestinian origin, Rima Hassan, who was detained by Israeli forces in international waters while aboard the humanitarian aid vessel “Madleen” en route to Gaza. Israeli lawmaker of Palestinian origin, Aida Touma-Suleiman, voiced her support for the protest, thanking those who speak out against “genocide, starvation, occupation, and apartheid,” and advocate for Palestinian freedom. She criticized EU leadership, calling it “hypocritical,” and questioned, “What more do they need to take action?” Daniel Alliët, pastor of Brussels' Beguinage Church, announced that a five-day hunger strike would begin there on June 16, inviting all concerned individuals to join the initiative. Several Members of the European Parliament, including Marc Botenga, Danilo Della-Valle, and Lynn Boylan, also expressed their support for the protest. Israel has continued to close all Gaza’s border crossings to humanitarian aid since early March, amid warnings by aid agencies of the risk of famine among Gaza’s 2.4 million inhabitants. The Israeli army, rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, has pursued a brutal offensive against Gaza since October 2023, killing over 55,200 Palestinians, most of them women and children. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave. Reporting by Dursun Aydemir // Writing by Mustafa Tuncer
