Dashcam footage from the rescue vehicle shows cars pulling to the left and right of their lanes as the ambulance speeds down the centre, effectively unzipping the traffic.

Authorities confirmed the incident took place on the Diyarbakır–Elazig highway in Turkey.

The provincial health directorate released the video on June 10 to highlight how the 'zipper method' can improve emergency response times.

Officials said that when motorists respond in this coordinated way, ambulances can reach their destinations faster, enabling quicker treatment for patients and potentially increasing survival rates by up to 40 per cent.

The driver featured in the clip was recognised for his prompt response during the emergency.
