This is the shocking moment a passenger throws herself from a moving ride-hailing car after reportedly realising she could not pay the fare.

Footage shows the vehicle still in motion when the commuter door swings open in Itapetininga, Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Suddenly, the woman tumbles onto the road. She is then seen getting up from the hard fall on the highway before walking away.

Reports say the ride was booked by a third party, starting in Jardim Shangri-La and heading towards the city centre.

The journey, expected to last about 10 minutes and cover nearly 4 kilometres, would have cost just BRL 10.40 (GBP 1.39).

Partway through the trip, the woman allegedly informed the driver she could not pay.

Moments later, she opened the door and jumped out. The driver stopped, reversed to check on her, and was told she would transfer the fare later via Pix, Brazil's instant payment system.

However, the payment never arrived. The case was registered at the Itapetininga Police Station as a possible attempt to avoid payment.

The woman has not been publicly identified, and her condition remains unclear following the fall on June 3.
