Truck runs red light and crashes into school van leaving seven people injured
This is the horrifying moment a trailer truck ploughed into a school van leaving seven people injured in central Thailand.
The out-of-control vehicle loaded with animal feed reportedly sped past a red traffic light before slamming into the school bus in Suphan Buri, on June 11.
Shocking CCTV footage shows the 10-wheeler barreling into the smaller vehicle and continuing to roll forward.
The terrified oungsters screamed as the impact sent their van spinning. Several of them were flung onto the road as shocked motorcycle riders rushed over to help.
Emergency services arrived at the scene and pried open the mangled pickup truck to extract two people trapped in the carnage.
Authorities said seven people were injured and rushed to the Sam Chuk Hospital. Two of them, including the bus driver Samrarn Watthanasuk, 75, and schoolgirl Duangdao Phengjui, 14, who were seriously wounded.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Khomdech Surattanawong of the Sam Chuk District Police Station said: 'We are questioning the trailer truck driver and gathering evidence to file charges against him.'
Truck driver Montri Nakphueng, 31, claimed the brakes malfunctioned right as he was passing through the intersection.
He said: 'The truck was heavy, and I couldn't stop it. When I reached the intersection, the brakes gave out completely, causing me to run the red light and collide head-on with the school bus at around 70 kph (44 mph).'
Furious mother Yaowadee Khotkhong, 52, said she wanted Montri to take accountability for the crash.
She said: 'My daughter has been riding this school bus for over a year, and the driver has always been calm and careful. I never imagined something like this would happen to her. To the truck driver, I just want to say, please be more careful. What if it were your child who was injured in an accident like this?'
Yaowadee added that Montri has not yet spoken with the children's parents to negotiate compensation.
Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
