Disabled woman without hands cooks street food to sell to tourists in Thailand
This hardworking Thai street vendor makes a living selling food to tourists despite having no hands.
Disabled woman Su Suthisa Inthararak, 30, runs her street food stall, hawking fried worms to customers near the Sports Authority of Thailand Market in Bangkok, Thailand.
Footage shows the industrious stallholder efficiently preparing trays of the seasoned insects, her deft movements revealing her experience in her trade.
She said: ‘Before becoming a vendor at this market, I worked at an insurance company. However, I lacked experience in job applications due to having grown up selling items with my mother.
'While my first job in insurance received a positive reception, I found myself preferring the vendor lifestyle. Therefore, I returned to working as a vendor.'
Su said she was grateful as her schoolmates and colleagues had treated her normally, and she was able to make friends without any problems.
However, she bemoaned the poor state support for disable people, who she said received only an 800 THB (17 GBP) monthly allowance.
She said: ‘I urge the government to assist other disabled people who, unlike me, may not be able to work due to their condition. I propose an increase in welfare payments to several thousand baht to better support our families, as instead of the meagre hundreds of baht we currently receive.'
VIDEO CAPTIONS
00:56 - 1:02: My name is Su, Suthisa Inthararak, aged 30 years old. I'm selling fried insects at the Sports Authority of Thailand Market.
1.03 - 1.15: I've been like this since birth. I'm not sure why, but my mother mentioned consuming expired birth control pills, although she's almost 70 years old and uncertain.
1.18 - 1.40: I've grown accustomed to living like this since birth, so I don't encounter many difficulties. However, certain daily tasks, like buttoning up clothes, were initially challenging and required practice before I became accustomed to them.
1.42 - 1.51: Before becoming a vendor at this market, I worked at an insurance company. However, I lacked experience in job applications due to having grown up selling items with my mother.
1.51 - 2.01 While my first job in insurance received a positive reception, I found myself preferring the vendor lifestyle. Therefore, I returned to working as a vendor.
2.01 - 2.15: I consider myself fortunate despite growing up with this condition. When I attended school, I was rarely bullied by classmates or anyone else; they treated me like a normal person. I was able to make friends without any issues.
2.15 - 2.27 These days, sales are around 4,000 to 5,000 baht per day before expenses. I could take around 7,000 to 8,000 baht per day in the past. Unfortunately, the worsening economy has led to a decline in my sales. I need to sell every day to earn a daily income.
2.27 - 2.42 I believe it's great for disabled people residing in countries that offer sufficient financial support for daily expenses, unlike ours.
2.44 - 3.03 We only receive a single welfare payment of 800 baht per month, which isn't adequate for daily needs. With the rising cost of living, expenses have become burdensome. For families like mine with children, the 800 baht monthly welfare might cover only a single day's expenses.
3.03 - 3.31 I urge the government to assist disabled people who, unlike me, may not be able to work due to their condition. I propose an increase in welfare payments to several thousand baht to better support our families, as opposed to the current hundreds.
3.31 - 3. 50 Please visit my store. I'm selling fried insects at the Sports Authority of Thailand Market from 5 PM to 10:30 PM. If you happen to pass by, please stop by my shop. It's located at block 5, which you can enter from entry 1.
