Germany: Thousands hold pro-Palestinian protest in Berlin
...BERLIN, GERMANY - JUNE 14, 2025: Thousands of people gathered in Berlin, the capital of Germany, to demonstrate in support of Palestine on Saturday, June 14. The protesters condemned Israel's attacks on Gaza, the deliberate starvation of Gazans, and the plans to forcibly displace Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Protesters carried placards reading “Stop Apartheid and Genocide,” “Palestine Will Never Die,” “Ethnic Cleansing Is Not a Conflict, It’s a Crime,” and “Gaza Wants to Live.” A representative of the organization “Jewish Voice for a Just Peace in the Middle East,” Udi Raz helped organize the protest, said that Palestinians are not only suffering because of Israel’s crimes against humanity but also due to state repression in Germany. He expressed that the liberation of Palestine from Zionism also means — and has always meant — the liberation of Judaism from Zionism. Sophi Asmus of Amnesty International also spoke at the rally, calling on the German government to clearly condemn Israel’s war crimes. She stressed the wide spread destruction of civilian infrastructure by Israeli forces, daily bombings and the starving children due to the Israeli blockade. Asmus emphasized that the starvation and forced displacement of Gaza’s entire population — as announced and carried out by Israeli commanders and government officials in press conferences and TV programs — constitute crimes against humanity. After the rally, some participants moved to a protest camp set up across from the Bundestag (Federal Parliament) in support of Palestine. A banner reading “Genocide” was hung on one of the tents, while demonstrators chanted slogans condemning Israel. According to UN agencies, Israel has blocked the entry of humanitarian, food, and medical supplies into the Strip since March 2, leading to widespread famine and the near-collapse of the health care system. The Israeli army, rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, has pursued a brutal offensive against Gaza since October 2023, killing nearly 55,300 Palestinians, most of them women and children. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave. Writing by Ayse Elif Erdis
