Boy, 10, killed as home collapses during storm in Thailand
A boy was killed when his home collapsed during a fierce storm in Thailand.
Phanuwat Pokklum, 10, was playing on his phone when a powerful gust toppled a tree onto the family property in Trat on June 14.
The heavy tree trunk crashed onto the roof, flattening the residence and burying the youngster under the rubble.
Rescue teams were called to the scene while clearing fallen trees in the area at 10:30 am local time.
Footage shows officers searching through the wreckage, where they found a lifeless Phanuwat pinned under a wooden beam. Officials said his neck had been broken by the fallen object.
Amnart Moonchot, a village officer, said: 'The tornado was very strong. It tore down trees across the road and destroyed several houses.
'The house where the boy was killed was located in a mangosteen orchard. The boy's parents had been hired to pick fruit, and their son was inside playing on his phone when the storm hit.
'We are still asking for assistance. We estimate at least four or five homes have been damaged.'
Phanuwat's body was sent to Bo Rai Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
The Thai Meteorological Department had issued warnings of scattered thunderstorms and isolated heavy rainfall across eastern provinces, including Trat, on the day of the incident.
Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are in their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
