A bridge collapsed in India, killing at least six tourists and leaving several others missing.

The incident occurred when the crossing point over the swollen Indrayani River gave way in Pune, Maharashtra, on June 15 at around 3:30 pm.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said the structural failure, caused by rust and overcrowding, led to the tragic disaster.

Nearly 100 people were reportedly on the bridge, a popular monsoon tourist spot, when the incident happened.

Pawar said: 'We have received various versions of the incident. As per the preliminary information, the bridge was old and rusted. Many people were standing on the bridge when it collapsed.'

Footage shows the crowd evacuating the structure while an ambulance is seen heading to the area.

Thirty-nine people have been rescued so far. Cranes are being deployed to clear the rubble.

Authorities have urged the public to avoid riverbanks and dilapidated structures amid continued rainfall.
