VARIOUS OF STREETS WITH PEOPLE WALKING, SOME CARRYING UMBRELLAS TO PROTECT FROM HEATTOKYO, JAPAN - JUNE 17: A high-pressure system has brought scorching temperatures across Japan on Tuesday, June 17, with summer-like heat intensifying despite the ongoing rainy season, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The extreme heat is expected to persist until Friday in many regions, raising concerns over heat-related illnesses. Eastern Japan and the Pacific side of the Tohoku region experienced severe heat, with temperatures surpassing 35 degrees Celsius (95°F) in multiple areas. Tokyo recorded its first "extremely hot" day of the year, with the mercury rising above 35°C. Authorities have issued heatstroke alerts, urging residents to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary outings, and stay hydrated. The JMA warned that the high-pressure system will continue to dominate eastern and northern Japan, prolonging the heatwave throughout the week. The unusually early heatwave comes just a week after the Kanto-Koshin region entered the rainy season on June 10, followed by Tohoku on Saturday. Citizens have been taking precautions, such as using umbrellas for shade, to protect themselves from the intense sun. Writing by Sibel Uygun
