Panicked shoppers scrambled to escape a supermarket when a magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck the southern Philippines this afternoon.

CCTV footage shows customers, including parents with young children, and staff rushing between shelves to flee the store in Surigao del Sur on June 17.

A mother was seen hurriedly guiding her children toward the exit as the ground shook.

Several items from the toiletries aisle were also seen falling to the floor during the tremor.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the earthquake's epicentre was traced to the small town of Lingig.

Its earthquake of tectonic origin occurred at 4:36 pm with a depth of 29 kilometers.

There were no reports of damage but Phivolcs warned that aftershocks may follow.

The Philippines is an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands inside the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' where the majority of Earth's volcano eruptions and earthquakes happen.
