TOOLEY LAKE, Ore. — While battling the Rowena Fire near Tooley Lake, firefighters from Polk County Task Force 4 received an unexpected and heartwarming visit — a baby deer in need of help.

The fawn emerged from a burned area and ran directly toward the crew from Brush 28, crying out and clearly distressed. Without hesitation, the firefighters scooped the young animal off the hot ground, gently cleaned it with bottled water, and checked for injuries.

Once the fawn appeared steady and safe, it wandered into a nearby green patch, away from immediate danger and hopefully back toward its family.

The Rowena Fire Facebook page praised Task Force 4 for their compassion, writing, “Amazing work — fighting fire and lending a hand (or hoof) to those in need.”
