This is the spectacular moment a lorry packed with fireworks exploded into flames after a crash in China.

The container truck, loaded with pyrotechnics, caught fire following a collision with another vehicle on the Erguang Expressway in Shanxi.

Dramatic footage shows colourful sparks shooting into the sky as thick black smoke billowed across the area on May 21.

The incident caused traffic congestion in both directions, as the blaze and smoke engulfed the lorry and loud explosions echoed through the night sky while the fireworks ignited.

Firefighters were immediately dispatched to extinguish the flames, and the fire was reportedly brought under control. Police closed the highway for several hours to secure the scene.

Authorities said the vehicle had been transporting fireworks legally and confirmed that the driver managed to escape unharmed.

Nearby motorists were urged to remain in their vehicles until the area was declared safe.

The local government has launched an investigation to determine whether proper safety measures were followed during the transport.

China remains the world's largest exporter of fireworks, generating USD 1.4 billion in 2024 and accounting for 86.8 per cent of the global market share. The country is followed by the United States and Japan.
