GULFPORT, Miss. — Gulfport police officers made an unusual summer safety call Monday after finding an unexpected visitor lounging near a local school — a curious alligator.

With humor and quick action, officers safely removed the reptile, joking on social media that the “scaly student” was trying to “scale up his education” without a backpack or permission slip.

“As summer approaches and outdoor activity increases, so does the chance of encountering wildlife — including alligators,” the department said. They reminded the public to stay alert and contact authorities if they spot wildlife in populated areas.

No injuries were reported, and the alligator was safely relocated.
