-BERLIN, GERMANY - JUNE 19, 2025: Activists from Greenpeace and Amnesty International held a joint protest in Berlin on Thursday ahead of World Refugee Day, calling for stronger protections for asylum seekers and criticizing Germany’s migration policies. The demonstration took place on the Spree River near the Bundestag, Germany’s federal parliament. Activists in canoes displayed banners depicting broken barbed wire, symbolizing borders, alongside messages such as “Human rights apply to everyone,” “Defend the right to asylum,” and “The climate crisis knows no borders.” In a press statement, the groups accused the German government of failing to distance itself from inhumane and racist demands regarding migration policy. Sophie Scheytt of Amnesty International said refugees should not be scapegoated for failed social policies, urging a shift in the narrative and the adoption of policies that oppose a climate of fear. Boat traffic around the Bundestag was halted during the protest. World Refugee Day is observed on June 20. Writing by Ayse Elif Erdis.
