Mountain Lion Documented Feeding on Elk Carcass in New Mexico
SANTA ANA PUEBLO, N.M. — A GPS-collared elk killed by a mountain lion on June 6 is offering researchers a unique look into predator behavior, according to the Pueblo of Santa Ana Department of Natural Resources.
The elk was taken down between 1 and 5 a.m., and by the time camera equipment was set up a day and a half later, the carcass had already started decomposing in the sun. Despite the smell, the mountain lion returned to feed for four consecutive nights.
After the big cat moved on, vultures began scavenging the remains. Officials continue to monitor the site to document additional wildlife interactions.
