Thousands of monkeys overrun homes in town in Thailand
Footage shows how thousands of monkeys overran a town in Thailand.
Resident Kesney Rojanvijitkul shows the out-of-control primates running rampant on the streets and through residential areas of Lopburi, Thailand.
Dozens of them were seen hopping onto a slowly moving blue pickup truck to look for food. The feral troop occupied half of the road, lounging on both the pavement and nearby roofs.
Onlooker Kesney said: 'People are secretly feeding the monkeys despite the ban, and this has caused them to roam further and disturb residents in nearby neighbourhoods.
'Attempts by outside conservationists to manage the problem have failed, leaving locals to deal with the monkey invasion for decades.'
Lopburi is home to an estimated 6,000 long-tailed macaques. Once mostly confined to temple grounds, these monkeys have now spread into homes, shops, and streets. They frequently steal food, damage property, and occasionally injure residents and tourists.
In 2024, the Lopburi Municipality and the National Parks Department signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to systematically capture, sterilise, and relocate macaques to a new two-hectare 'Monkey Garden' in Pho Kao Ton.
