US: Ranch Place Fire Threatens East San Jose Homes
San Jose, United States - June 19, 2025 A vegetation fire erupted in East San Jose on Tuesday afternoon, prompting a swift response from city fire crews and Cal Fire. The blaze, named the Ranch Place Fire, started near Ranch Place and Old Piedmont Road, scorching nearly 100 acres. The fire, reported at 4:17 p.m., rapidly spread through dry vegetation, threatening homes in the Alum Rock area. Cal Fire and San Jose Fire Department deployed 170 personnel, 41 engines, two helicopters, and five airtankers to combat the flames. Evacuation orders were issued for neighborhoods along Sierra Road as the fire came within 20 feet of some homes. By Tuesday evening, the blaze was 75% contained, and evacuation orders were downgraded to warnings. Firefighters worked through the night, securing containment lines. By Wednesday morning, the fire was 100% contained, with no injuries reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Resident John Garcia expressed gratitude for the fire crews’ efforts, noting his mailbox was damaged by a firetruck but his home was spared. “I’m lucky,” Garcia said. “I have my life. I have my house safe.” Officials urge residents to maintain defensible space around their properties, especially with more warm weather expected. The Ranch Place Fire serves as a reminder of the growing wildfire risks in the region.
