A section of Interstate 40 in Tennessee was closed due to flash floods and rockslides near the North Carolina border.

Footage shows the road submerged in muddy water, with several vehicles stranded and partially flooded.

A severe rainstorm caused the widespread damage on Wednesday afternoon, June 18.

Officials said it could take at least two weeks for water levels to recede, repairs to be carried out, and cleanup operations to be completed.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation reported that several vehicles were damaged, though no injuries were recorded.

The affected stretch includes 12 miles of I-40 across North Carolina and Tennessee that were either washed out or severely damaged by floodwaters surging through the Pigeon River Gorge, an area previously impacted by Hurricane Helene in late September.
