A wacky 'Pigeon Pageant' held in New York celebrated the often-reviled bird with a colourful celebration.

The lighthearted event featured participants dressed in feathered costumes, each impersonating a pigeon through creative performances at Hudson Yards on June 14.

Among seven contestants, British artist Miriam Abrahams, who has lived in New York for 11 years, claimed first prize and was awarded a gold crown.

Adding to the spectacle was a towering 16ft statue of a pigeon that dominated the festivities.

Organisers said the pageant aimed to 'reclaim the pigeon' and encourage people to appreciate the urban bird in a new light.

Pigeons are often viewed as dirty or bothersome due to their scavenging habits and presence in crowded public spaces - sometimes dubbed 'rats with wings' due to the diseases they can spread.

However, they are also known for their intelligence and adaptability.

New York City is estimated to be home to around nine million pigeons.
