Bakersfield, United States - June 22, 2025 06/21/2025 06:08 pm GMT-0700 BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Bakersfield emergency responders, including the fire department, police, and Hall Ambulance, responded to the scene of a two-vehicle traffic collision at the intersection of Baker Street and Niles that left one driver deceased. The extended incident began just after 6 p.m. Saturday when Bakersfield Police Department officers were dispatched to a reported vehicle versus pedestrian hit-and-run traffic collision at the intersection of Baker and Sumner streets. According to the Bakersfield PD, officers received reports of a second collision at Baker and Niles Street while en route to the first incident. Upon arrival at the initial scene, officers located an adult male pedestrian down in the roadway. He was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. At the same time, officers arriving at the second scene found two severely damaged vehicles engulfed in flames. One of the drivers, an adult male, suffered major injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The other driver, also an adult male, sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The Bakersfield PD's preliminary investigation indicates that the surviving driver was traveling northbound on Baker Street when he struck the pedestrian at Sumner Street. The driver then continued northbound at a high rate of speed, failing to stop for a red light at the intersection of Niles Street, where he collided with a westbound vehicle. Toxicology results are pending to determine whether drugs or alcohol were contributing factors, according to the Bakersfield PD. The investigation is ongoing.
