The Bushehr facility was the first civilian nuclear power plant built in the Middle East. Construction on the plant started in 1975 but stopped numerous times due to revolution and war. In 1995 a contract was signed with the Russian Ministry for Atomic Energy to finish building the plant. It finally opened in 2007 and started adding electricity to the national grid in 2011. Operational control of the plant was handed over to Iran in September 2013.
