Philippines: Chinese Coast Guard Attacks Philippine Vessels Assisting Fishermen In Panatag Shoal
Philippines - June 20, 2025 Panatag Shoal, Philippines – Four vessels from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), supported by Philippine Coast Guard personnel, sailed to Panatag Shoal this morning. The mission aimed to protect Filipino fishermen and deliver fuel subsidies under the “Bagong Pilipinas” program for food security. More than 20 local fishing boats received supplies. At around 10:00 AM, Chinese Coast Guard vessel CCG-4203 aggressively approached BRP Datu Taradapit, coming within 600 yards and firing a water cannon. The impact briefly struck the vessel's port quarter, but the crew avoided further damage through evasive action. Half an hour later, another Chinese ship, CCG-3105, fired a water cannon at BRP Datu Tamblot. The attack missed. A total of six China Coast Guard vessels, two PLA Navy warships, and several Chinese maritime militia ships were observed attempting to block the mission. All BFAR operations took place within the Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone. Under international law, Filipino fishermen have the right to fish in these waters. BFAR and PCG activities are fully supported by the Philippine Maritime Zones Act, UNCLOS, and the 2016 Arbitral Award. Despite illegal and dangerous harassment, BFAR vessels completed their mission. The Philippine government reaffirmed its commitment to protect fishermen and continue lawful operations in Panatag Shoal.
