South Africas second largest political party celebrates 25 years, promises better social grants and safety
The Democratic Alliance( DA ), South Africas second largest political party and member of the coalition government celebrates twenty five years of existence today. Founded five years after the first democratic election the DA has been the opposition till recently when the former ruling party, the ANC slipped below a majority vote.
The party held a very low key birthday celebration in Hanover Park and handed out blankets to residents of a retirement village run by the City of Cape Town Municipality.
Party leader, John Steenhuisen used the opportunity to highlight the aims and objectives of the DA, one being a stronger economy which he promised attendees will lead to a better old age and social grant.
The DA currently runs the City of Cape Town and the Government of the Western Cape, Jean Pierre Smith the mayoral committee member for Safety & Security highlighted the progress made with crime fighting in the Metropole.
