The rhythmic beats of traditional drums—the mina, curbeta, and cures—echoed through the town as dancers moved with passion, embodying the festival's deep spiritual and cultural roots. The celebration, held annually in honor of Saint John the Baptist, is a cornerstone of local identity, blending religious reverence with Afro-descendant traditions. The Fiesta de San Juan Bautista is a celebration of being Afro-Venezuelan, of African culture, of overcoming the pain of chattel slavery. It is celebrated with mesmerizing drum (tambores) music and streets filled with vibrant dancing. Declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity the San Juan de Curiepe festival draws visitors from across Venezuela.
