Injured bird dangling upside down from utility pole rescued along with its chicks
An injured bird dangling upside down from a utility pole was rescued along with its chicks in Russia.
Footage shows a stork entangled in electrical wires, hanging upside down beside its nest at the top of the post in Leningrad Oblast on June 20.
The animal rescue group CATSPAS confirmed that kind-hearted locals freed the distressed creature.
CATSPAS said the injured parent was unable to fly, leaving all caregiving responsibilities to its mate. This prompted consultation with an expert from the Sirin Rehabilitation Centre.
Rescuers discovered a large nest atop the concrete power-line pole, initially finding four chicks.
Further inspection using a pole-mounted camera revealed a fifth chick hidden deeper inside the nest.
One rescuer described the nest as 'at least one and a half metres in diameter and around a metre in height' emphasising its substantial size.
All five chicks were carefully lowered to the ground and placed in carriers for safety while the injured adult was transported to an aviary for treatment.
Officials plan to move the entire stork family to the Sirin facility for ongoing care, with the aim of releasing them back into the wild to resume their natural migration.
