Iran: Tehran resident hopes for lasting ceasefire between Iran, Israel
Storyline: A resident in the Iranian capital Tehran has expressed relief at the news of a ceasefire with Israel and hopes it can bring enduring peace to the region following the "terrible experience" of the recent conflict. Tensions between the two countries have escalated since June 13 when Israel launched its first attack on Iran, with the two sides then exchanging a barrage of missile strikes. The conflict took another turn when U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. Air Force had bombed three Iranian nuclear sites, with the strikes taking place in the early hours of Sunday local time. In retaliation, Iran on Monday targeted the U.S. Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar with missiles. Despite fears of a further escalation, Trump announced that a ceasefire between the two sides would begin at around 04:00 GMT Tuesday. During an interview with the China Global Television Network (CGTN) in Tehran on Tuesday, local resident Alireza expressed his hope that the ceasefire can help restore a sense of normality following days of uncertainty. In an earlier social media post, Trump said the ceasefire aimed to bring an end to what he called the "12-day war" and said the breakthrough could have "saved the Middle East from years of destruction," before later urging Israel not to drop further bombs on Iran. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Tuesday that his country is ready to resolve issues within international frameworks and at the negotiating table. The death toll from Israeli strikes across Iran since June 13 has reached 606, with 5,332 others injured, Iran's Health Minister Mohammad-Reza Zafarghandi said on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Israel's Health Ministry has reported 28 fatalities and 3,238 injuries on its side since the onset of the conflict. Shotlist: Tehran, Iran - June 24, 2025: 1. SOUNDBITE (Farsi, dubbed in English) Alireza (full name not given), resident: "Nobody would be happy to see war between two countries or two individuals. It was a terrible experience. We were in a very bad situation. The war was imposed on our country. But the situation improved as the war continued. Our lives partially returned to normal. I hope the ceasefire will be durable. If the ceasefire continues and leads to more strategic agreements, I don't think Iran will violate it. I hope Israel also remains committed to the ceasefire. We really need peace in the region and agreement among all nations. War is the last thing we need now. The first thing we need is peace." Tehran, Iran - June 13, 2025: 3.
