-THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS - JUNE 25, 2025: Pro-Palestine demonstrators and climate activists encountered a forceful intervention from police after blocking the A12 motorway in protest against the NATO leaders' summit in The Hague on Wednesday, June 25. The protest, organized by the Extinction Rebellion movement, resulted in the detention of several participants. Demonstrators chanted slogans in support of Palestine and criticized global inaction on climate change. Police were seen using batons at times, and some protesters were physically dragged off the road. Extinction Rebellion Netherlands later posted a statement on their X account declaring: “Stop the genocide! Stop fascism and racism! Stop fossil destruction!” NATO leaders on Wednesday gathered in The Hague for a historic summit aimed at strengthening the alliance amid growing global threats, as Secretary General Mark Rutte proposed that all member states allocate 5% of GDP to defense spending. NATO’s 32 member states committed to a significant boost in defense spending, pledging to allocate 5% of gross domestic product (GDP) annually by 2035 to meet both core defense requirements and broader security needs.
