Tourists flee as fire rips through busy bar in Pattaya
Tourists fled for their lives as a fire ripped through a bar in Pattaya.
Holidaymakers were drinking at The Chalawan Bar Pattaya when they noticed smoke coming from the upper floors of the building on Wednesday, June 25.
Staff rushed upstairs to investigate, and they discovered a guest room already engulfed in flames. They called firefighters and ushered shocked customers outside.
Emergency services arrived at around 5 pm and found smoke wafting out from the top floor of the four-storey building.
Footage shows firemen dousing the bar's interior with water.
Authorities said the blaze was extinguished with no one seriously injured.
Local district chief Thrit Chancharoen said: 'I asked the shop's employees and they said that while everyone was working downstairs, they smelled something burning. They checked and found smoke coming from above.
'The firefighters said there was no risk of the fire reigniting. The cause is believed to be an electrical short circuit, but Pattaya City Police will continue to investigate.'
Fires in Thailand are commonly caused by ageing electrical infrastructure, extensive use of wood in construction, and regional heat waves that can exacerbate fire risks. Rapid fire response can also be hampered in densely packed neighbourhoods where narrow streets can delay firefighting efforts.
On June 14, a blaze erupted at the Sands Sauna Beach Club Pattaya, sparking panic among holidaymakers and staff.
On June 7, French husband Dandrieu Thierry, 57, and his Thai wife escaped a condominium fire caused by an electric bike explosion in the Thai Sin City.
On May 7, guests fled from the city's La Santir Condominium after an air conditioner short-circuited and sparked a large fire.
