This is the horrifying moment dozens of paddleboarders huddled together after being swept nearly two miles out into shark-infested waters by freak winds.

Emergency services in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, launched a major rescue operation on June 21 after more than 100 holidaymakers were pulled out into the South Atlantic.

Footage shows some of the holidaymakers clustered together three kilometres from the shore, waiting to be saved.

Local media reported that strong winds had pushed them out to sea, and powerful currents made it impossible for them to paddle back.

Firefighters and the coastguard deployed a fleet of helicopters and boats to ferry the stranded boarders back to Praia do Leme beach.

One fire service clip shows rescuers helping victims into a helicopter rescue net before they were winched up and flown to safety.

Official figures stated that 73 boarders were rescued during the operation, while 27 managed to return to shore unaided.

Eight people required medical treatment.

Rio's coastal waters are home to Brazilian sharpnose sharks, typically around one metre long, which are known to be voracious feeders.

Scientific studies conducted last year found that many of these sharks tested positive for cocaine, a drug often dumped into the sea by traffickers. It is believed to increase the sharks' aggression.

The fire department said: 'If there is a risk of strong winds, rain or rough seas, do not go.

'Always wear a life jacket, avoid navigation areas and notify someone of your route, sending your location in real time.'
