Heavy rains caused a highway bridge to collapse in Venezuela.

Footage shows a section of the Jose Antonio Paez Highway damaged as severe flooding swamped Portuguesa on Thursday, June 26.

A large slab of the tarmac had crumbled, rendering the motorway impassable.

Diosdado Cabello, Minister of the Interior, Justice, and Peace, said work was underway to repair the bridge.

He said: 'This crossing will be open soon.'

He added that it will take around 60 days for the reconstruction.

Severe weather caused by the Intertropical Convergence Zone has been battering Venezuela since June 24.

Authorities said more than 4,700 people were displaced, evacuated, or in need of urgent assistance.
