VARIOUS OF FIGHTER JET REFUELLING FROM KC-135R STRATOTANKER 11.VARIOUS OF F-4 PHANTOM, F-16 FIGHTER JETSADANA, TÜRKİYE - JUNE-2, 2025: The 101st Aerial Refueling Squadron, based at the 10th Main Jet Base Command in Incirlik, Adana, plays a vital role in sustaining Turkish Air Force operations by conducting mid-air refueling missions at altitudes of 26,000 feet and speeds of up to 950 kilometers per hour. Known as the “Asenalar Squadron,” the unit operates KC-135R Stratotankers, capable of refueling Turkish F-16 and F-4E/2020 Phantom fighter jets mid-flight, significantly extending their range and mission endurance. Anadolu Agency captured the full sequence of a recent mission, from pre-flight briefing to in-flight refueling over Turkish airspace. Before takeoff, crew members conducted a detailed mission briefing, covering the flight route and target aircraft. Following a technical inspection, the tanker departed and rendezvoused with fighter jets over the southeastern province of Diyarbakir. At an altitude of 20,000 feet and a cruising speed of 650 km/h, the tanker performed multiple refueling operations using a “boom” system — a telescoping tube operated manually by a trained boom operator. Each transfer lasted a few minutes, requiring precise coordination between the aircraft. Over the course of the four-hour mission, the squadron transferred fuel to several fighter jets before safely returning to base. The squadron supports cross-border military operations and collaborates with the 401st Test Squadron on flight tests. Some missions cover several thousand kilometers and involve transferring up to 100 tons of fuel. Türkiye is among a limited number of nations operating the KC-135R Stratotanker, considered one of the world’s most valuable aerial refueling platforms. Its capabilities provide the Turkish Armed Forces with extended operational reach and bolster NATO’s aerial mission capacity. Reporting by Utku Simsek - Writing by Berkay Gur
