This is the shocking moment a drunk Swedish tourist was beaten by furious locals after he shoved a bar girl to the ground in Pattaya.

The holidaymaker, 44, was reportedly arguing with the Thai woman on a notorious street in the 'Sin City', early morning on June 29.

Footage shows the large-built Swede being dragged by the fiery blonde bar girl before he pushed her onto the pavement. He shoved a motorbike and struck a security guard in the face as he stormed off, prompting enraged residents to intervene.

They mobbed the intoxicated tourist, who was left shielding his head with his hands as he endured a barrage of kicks and slaps.

A police spokesman said both the Swedish man, whom they did not name, and the injured guard have lodged reports over the incident.

He said: 'Officers have requested medical certificates from both parties and have scheduled further investigation.'

The Swedish national reportedly gave a conflicting version of events to police but refused to speak to the media. Authorities have not disclosed the contents of his statement.

Phong, 37, a local who joined in the melee, said: 'I admit that what happened wasn't good, but people need to understand that this tourist was excessively violent. He shoved the woman, attacked someone who had nothing to do with it, and headbutted the guard.'

Police said the parties involved will be summoned for legal proceedings.

Former fishing village Pattaya became popular with American troops on 'rest and relaxation' breaks in the 1950s and 1960s when the US military had bases in Thailand while fighting Communism in Vietnam. Rural families are said to have even dressed their sons as women to cash in on the gold rush.

The handful of bars in the coastal town quickly grew, and it is now the world's biggest sex holiday destination, with round-the-clock prostitution and drugs - a modern-day Sodom and Gomorrah rife with crime and debauchery.

Government chiefs have attempted to clean up the city, but regular violence, depravity and corruption claims continue to blight its reputation.
