A wealthy Chinese tourist who fled when the Thai escort he was with died has handed himself in to police.

Businessman Duoyin Wu, 37, had hired sex worker Irada Potaram, 21, before she passed away in a hotel from an overdose in Bangkok, Thailand, on February 10.

Wu fled to neighboring Laos, a Communist enclave next to his motherland, but surrounded himself at the Chok Chai district police station in Thai capital on June 27.

Police Captain Phinyo Wiangkham said an arrest warrant for Wu was issued by the Criminal Court on April 16.

Wu was charged with selling a category 1 narcotic (methamphetamine and MDMA), selling a category 2 drug (ketamine), and committing negligence causing the death of another person.

Police Colonel Pornthawee Somwong said investigators kept track of Wu's movements and pressured him until he decided to surrender.

The cop said: ‘According to the interrogation, the suspect denied his charges.

‘He testified that he consumed drugs with the victim, but she used them by herself and was not threatened.

‘We handed him to the inquiry officer for further legal action.'

Irada was reportedly found dead from a drug overdose in room 112 of the morph Bangkok Hotel on February 10 at 7.10am.

She was found deceased and naked, with 'happy water' and ketamine discovered at the scene.

Following the investigation, the Metropolitan Police Bureau identified Wu as the suspect and charged him in absentia with negligently causing the death of another person.

Irada was reportedly hired through an agency to entertain him with drug-fueled sex.

The owner of the escort agency, Panita, also known as Alin, 19, was summoned to the station for interrogation and was informed of the charge on February 17 of 'procuring a person for prostitution'.

Police Colonel Setthaphan Srisakhon, superintendent of Chok Chai Police Station at that time, said that investigators would summon those related to the case for questioning.

However, only Wu was reportedly staying with Irada at the hotel.

Officers said that evidence at the scene indicated that the case could possibly be drug-related, but the specific drug needed to be confirmed before including it in the case file.

Regarding the rumour of a chat message from the inquiry officer negotiating for compensation, Colonel Setthaphan said that he only tried to assist Irada's family with the funeral expenses.

He denied knowing any information about an offer in exchange for dropping the case.

Colonel Setthaphan confirmed that the inquiry officer was not involved in this, as the case file had been open since the incident was reported, with no benefit involved.

From the first day, they had notified the Immigration Bureau to put Wu on the watch list to prevent him from leaving the country.

Colonel Setthaphan said that Wu frequently visited Thailand and had a Thai name, Jetsada.

He said that investigators were looking into Wu's rental expenses to check what business he might be running.

The policeman said: ‘We have interrogated her before charging her with procuring another person for prostitution.

‘Then, we brought her to the Criminal Court for detention immediately.'
