AMITYVILLE, N.Y. — A closed door and a quick fire response helped save lives and limit damage during a house fire in Amityville on June 25.

The blaze broke out in a second-floor bedroom, prompting a rapid response from the Amityville Fire Department with mutual aid from North Amityville, Copiague and Massapequa departments. While firefighters acted swiftly, it was the resident's decision to close the bedroom door that proved crucial.

According to the department, the closed door confined the fire to the room where it began, preventing flames and smoke from spreading into the hallway and potentially throughout the rest of the home.

“This simple action likely prevented a much more dangerous situation,” the department said in a statement. “It shows the life-saving power of something as basic as closing a door.”

Officials are reminding the public to always “close before you doze,” especially at night, when closed doors can offer valuable protection while residents sleep.
