UK: Kids Caught Playing On Rails As Network Rail Launches Urgent Safety Campaign Ahead Of Summer Break
Milton Keynes, United Kingdom - April 23, 2023 A shocking video shows children standing and playing on railway tracks, prompting a fresh wave of railway safety sessions across Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, and Buckinghamshire. Network Rail has launched the campaign just as schools prepare to break for summer. Staff will visit level crossings throughout the week to engage communities and raise awareness. Between April 2017 and June 2025, 399 level crossing misuse incidents were recorded between London Euston and Crewe. Berry Lane level crossing in Milton Keynes reported the highest number—142 cases. There have also been 23 near misses involving people and trains, including young children and dog walkers. To combat these dangers, Network Rail is organizing in-person safety events from July 2 to July 4 at key locations: Cotton Mill, St Albans; Kempston Hardwick, Bedfordshire; Woburn Sands, Buckinghamshire; Bow Brickhill and Berry Lane, Milton Keynes. Johnny Amadi-Ahuama, level crossing manager, emphasized the importance of vigilance: “Our events aim to help educate local people about the importance of patience, safety signals, and avoiding distractions when approaching and using level crossings.” The campaign encourages the public to stop, look, and listen, reminding everyone that safety begins with personal responsibility. Network Rail is working with British Transport Police, councils, and local partners to spread the message and prevent future tragedies.
