VARIOUS OF SHIITE MUSLIM ATTENDING MOURNING RITUAL INSIDE REPUBLIC MOSQUE IN BASRA / DETAILS FROM RITUALBASRA, IRAQ - JULY 02: A mourning ceremony was held at the Republic Mosque in Basra on Wednesday, July 2, as part of Muharram observances commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, and his 72 companions in the Battle of Karbala. Participants marked the solemn occasion by reciting elegies and laments in honor of the Karbala martyrs. The event was part of a wider series of religious activities during the Islamic month of Muharram, a period of deep significance for the Shia Muslim community. Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar, marks a time of mourning for the Battle of Karbala, which took place in 680 CE in present-day Iraq. The battle ended with the killing of Imam Hussein by forces loyal to Umayyad Caliph Yazid I and is remembered as a powerful symbol of resistance against tyranny and injustice.
