A Filipina mother was killed in a horror car crash on tourist island Phuket.

Joy Tarroza Divinagracia, 40, was riding pillion on a motorbike when an out-of-control SUV ploughed into it on a narrow road near Kalim Beach on June 30 evening.

CCTV showed the white Honda HR-V smashing the two-wheeler from behind, sending the riders flying mid-air.

Shocked tourists screamed as the vehicle continued hurtling forward and crashed into more cars as the suspect allegedly tried to flee the scene.

The driver, Kritsana Kadam, 26, reportedly locked himself inside the SUV as enraged locals surrounded it and demanded he come out. When he finally opened the door, he tried to bolt away but was blocked by the mob.

Police arrived at the scene and found five vehicles damaged in the pile-up. They arrested Kritsana, a ride-hailing app cabbie who was wearing an electric ankle monitor at the time. The device is commonly used to track individuals on probation or parole.

Officers said Kritsana tested negative for alcohol and drugs at the scene. He was charged with reckless driving causing death and serious injury.

Police Captain Pongsatorn Phothong of the Patong Police Station said: 'The electronic monitoring shackle on the driver's ankle was from an old case for which he is released on bail.

'We have already notified representatives of the Philippines Embassy regarding the fatality. The investigation remains ongoing to establish the full sequence of events leading to this tragic crash.'

Authorities identified the other injured individuals as Kanyanat Phanumas, 24, Chukwan Prajikkit, 55, and Ratchadaporn Boonjing, 33.

A resident Chaitrakul Jubprang, 25, said: 'My friends and I were watching YouTube when it happened. The HR-V came speeding down the road and slammed into a motorcycle with a loud bang, then dragged it along for a bit.

'The SUV then hit another motorcycle before crashing into a pickup truck. After that, the driver just sat in the car while the villagers came knocking on the door, but he wouldn't open it.

'The road at the bend in Kalim is really narrow, and accidents happen often. I've been here for about a year and I've already seen three or four crashes. I really hope the municipality comes to inspect and put traffic lights here.'

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
