According to the Palestinian news agency WAFA, dozens of Israeli settlers set fire to large areas of land along the bypass road near the village of Madama, south of Nablus. Later in the afternoon, settlers reportedly ignited fires in the area stretching from Til to Burin villages, causing extensive damage to hundreds of olive trees. According to Israeli government data, illegal settlers staged 414 attacks against Palestinians in the first half of this year, up 30% from 2024. Palestinian reports indicate that by the end of 2024, the settler population in the West Bank reached around 770,000, spread across 180 settlements and 256 outposts, of which 138 are classified as pastoral and agricultural. Settlements are established with the approval of the Israeli government, while outposts are built by illegal settlers without government approval; all are considered illegal under international law. The Palestinian Authority has consistently affirmed that the West Bank is an integral part of a future Palestinian state, warning that any annexation of the occupied territory would mark the collapse of the two-state solution. Israel has occupied the West Bank since the 1967 Middle East War. Israel has accelerated its settlement activities in the occupied territory since the start of its genocidal war on the Gaza Strip in October 2023. According to Palestinian figures, at least 988 Palestinians have been killed and more than 7,000 injured in the West Bank by Israeli forces and illegal settlers since October 2023. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) last July declared Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory illegal and called for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
