Belgium: European Council President meets Chinese FM
European Council President Antonio Costa on Wednesday met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Brussels, Belgium, pledging to work with China to enhance understanding. Costa said this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Europe and China, presenting an important opportunity for the further development of bilateral relations. Noting that both Europe and China support multilateralism, Costa said in the face of a world with rising uncertainties, both sides have the responsibility to jointly send out clear and strong signals on key issues, so as to inject stable confidence and positive expectations into the world. Although there are differences between Europe and China, Costa said, the European side is willing to respect each other, overcome differences and enhance understanding with the Chinese side, and join hands to address global challenges. Europe looks forward to the joint efforts of both sides to ensure the complete success of the new EU-China leaders' meeting. The European Union will continue to firmly pursue the one-China policy, he added. Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said China regards Europe as an important pole in a multipolar world and maintains continuity and stability in its policy towards Europe. Whether Europe is in favorable or adverse circumstances, China always supports Europe in promoting integration and is glad to see the EU enhance its strategic autonomy and play a greater role on the international stage, Wang said. China is willing to enhance communication and coordination with the European side, make good preparations for the next leaders' meeting, and inject new connotations and open up new prospects for the China-EU Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, the Chinese foreign minister said. Wang met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on the same day. Shotlist: Brussels, Belgium - July 2, 2025: 1.
