SEEDSKADEE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE, Wyo. — The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service shared an “a-moose-ing” summer fact this week: moose are excellent swimmers and enjoy the water.

A new video captured at Seedskadee and Cokeville Meadows National Wildlife Refuges shows a moose effortlessly swimming across a river before climbing onto the bank, shaking off, and trotting into the wilderness. The footage highlights a lesser-known behavior of North America’s largest deer species.

Moose frequently wade into rivers and ponds during the summer to cool off and feed on aquatic vegetation. They are also capable of diving to reach plants on river bottoms.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service encourages visitors to respect wildlife and enjoy their natural behaviors from a safe distance.
