China: China accelerates smart, green port development with world-leading automation
[Voiceover] China is continuing its development of smart and green port operations, helping transform global trade with cutting-edge automation and near-zero carbon operations. In May, the Mediterranean Shipping Company's MSC Flora, one of the world's largest container ships, docked at the Qingdao Port in east China's Shandong Province. It marked the third new shipping route added to the port in just one month. Thanks to digital upgrades at the port, container pickup time has been slashed from 4 hours to just 20 minutes. [Soundbite] Ren Lingli, senior engineer, Qingdao Port: "Starting from inspection, we've moved all possible services online. This allows us to significantly reduce cargo transit time." [Voiceover] From January to April this year, Qingdao Port handled an historic number of TEUs. But speed wasn't the only focus. The upgrades are helping cut emissions, too. [Soundbite] Wang Zhili, Tianjin Port Group: "Our 360 new-energy trucks and 132 smart transport robots are expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 40,000 tons annually." [Voiceover] China now operates 52 automated container terminals that feature 5G-powered autonomous vehicles and unmanned trucks. And more than 60 percent of the trucks at China's top ports, now run on clean energy, further improving air quality. [Soundbite] Zheng Qingxiu, Ministry of Transport: "We will continue to improve smart port standards, promote digital transformation, and advance green port development to accelerate the construction of near-zero carbon terminals." [Voiceover] Data from the Ministry of Transport shows China's ports handled over 110 million TEUs in the first four months of this year, up nearly 8 percent year-on-year.
